Obituary

Dorothy Maud Ward, age 92, died peacefully on July 12, 2016 at the ClauRu Deville Nursing Home, after a brief struggle with a heart condition. Dorothy was born on November 19, 1923, the daughter of Jude and Lula Bell Cook and the fifth of nine children. A lifelong Fredericktown resident, Dorothy was born and raised on the Cook Dairy farm on West Main. Over her lifetime, she worked at the Brown Shoe Factory, the Fredericktown Auction Barn Restaurant and Douglas Drapery Company, which sold draperies in St. Louis that were made in Fredericktown. Among her Douglas Drapery clients were Stan Musial and the St. Louis Cardinals Hall of Fame at the old Busch Stadium. An excellent seamstress, Dorothy also loved to make girls' clothing and doll dresses, blessing many with her work. In 1943, Dorothy married the love of her life and high school sweetheart Ernest Ward. They owned and operated the Ward Family Farm just south of Fredericktown for 56 years. They also owned a second farm at Mine La Motte for many years. Dorothy and Ernest (Dot and Ernie) were married for 68 years until his death in 2011. Dorothy was a member of the Fredericktown United Methodist Church since 1933. She was an active member in the church, including singing in the choir for over 40 years. Dorothy is survived by son Robert, son James, son Stephen and wife Kathleen, 5 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. Devoted wife, incredible Mom and faithful friend, she loved well and will be missed.
