MEMORIAL OBITUARY OF
MRS. ASA LEE (MAE) COOK
SPETEMBER 21, 1911 – SEPTEMBER 4, 2010
Mae Cook, 98, of Harrisburg, Missouri, formerly of Fredericktown, Missouri went to be with the Lord on Saturday September 4, 2010. She died peacefully surrounded by her loving family. Mae was preceded in death by her loving husband of 40 years, Asa Lee Cook, her sister Ruby Bollinger, her sister Mabel Ragsdale, and son in law Gerald Cooper.
Mae and Mabel were raised in the formative years by Katie Davis also of Fredericktown. Mae had a special relationship with Grandma Katie and they were quite devoted to one another.
She is survived by her daughters Judy Kay Cook Thiele of Plainfield, Indiana and son-in-law David Thiele, Angie Cook Cooper of Harrisburg, Missouri, grandchildren Deborah Thiele McQuay of Carmel, Indiana and her husband Kameron, Davi Thiele Stein of Evansville, Indiana, Judi E. cooper of Harrisburg, Missouri, Tricia Cooper Meyer of Coal City, Illinois and her husband Rick, Jerry Cooper of Lawrence, Kansas and his wife Marsha, Tim Cooper of Coal City, Illinois and his wife Kim, and Heather Harris of Indianapolis, and her husband Wes. Mae is also survived by 13 great grandchildren, nieces and nephews as well as extended family in the Fredericktown area.
Mae attended Warrensburg (Central Missouri State College) Cape State (SEMSC) and Flat River Jr. College receiving a BS degree in Education from Washington University without ever being on the campus. She taught school at Annapolis, MO., Village Creek, Mine La Motte, Mill Creek and Desloge. Mae had high standards for her students and earnestly desired to instill good character in them.
Mae was a farmerette and the recipient of the farm family award in the 1950's along with her late husband and daughters. She was a 4-H leader and took many students to sewing classes at Singer, led cooking classes and home furnishing classes. She was an avid gardener and canned, and cared for the farm along with Asa Lee. She was involved in church activities at the First Presbyterian Church of Fredericktown including circle and singing in the choir.
In 1982 following Asa Lee's passing, Mae relocated to Mattoon, Illinois and made her life there for 23 years where she was involved in reading
Club, church and women's circle.
Mae liked to walk for her health and also enjoyed handwork including crocheting, knitting, tatting and quilting. She took pride in making many projects for various members of her family. She made many family heirlooms. She also made delicious dinner rolls and pie.
Mae moved to Columbia, in the spring of 2006 where she loved living in the country surroundings again with her daughter Angie and son-in-law Gerald Cooper. Mae would have celebrated her 99th birthday on September 21, 2010. She was energetic, motivated and an inspiration to all who knew her. The family wishes to thank all the staff at Fulton Manor and hospice for their compassionate care provided during the last few months.
