Reverend Gerhardt J.C. Gerike, 103, collapsed at his home in Babson Park, Florida on Monday, November 10, 2014, and went home to be with his Lord on that day at Lake Wales Medical Center.
He was born on May 1, 1911 in Tripp, South Dakota. He graduated from St. Paul's High School and College on June 4, 1931 and from Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, Missouri on June 4, 1935.
He married Letta Louise Fulton, of Patton, Missouri, on May 3, 1936 at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in St. Louis.
From 1944 - 1946, he served in the 9th Armored Division as a U.S. Army Military Chaplain for all of but 5 months in the European Theater of Operations. He was in the Battle of the Bulge and was awarded the Bronze Star and Unit Citation.
Upon discharge from the Chaplain's Corps, he earned a BA degree from Valparaiso University, Valparaiso, Indiana. He went on to earn his Bachelor and Master degrees in Divinity from Concordia Seminary and continued with advanced pastoral and clinical education in Des Moines, Iowa.
Since 1936 he served as pastor in 11 parishes throughout the Midwest. Upon his retirement in 1986 he continued serving on a full-time and part-time basis in Missouri at approximately 15 vacant parishes in various localities such as Potosi, Park Hills, Bonne Terre, and Bismarck. Since 2000, he assisted in pastoral ministry at Lake Wales Lutheran Church, Lake Wales, Florida and was scheduled to participate in upcoming Advent services and bible classes.
He was acknowledged in Marquis "Who's Who in Religion," 1977, also in International "Who's Who in Community Service," 1979.
He is survived by daughters Gloria, Mrs. L.E. Vogel, Spring Valley, Minnesota; Paula, Mrs. R.B. Jolley, San Diego, California; Carol, Mrs. G.L. Seyfert, Lake Wales, nine grandchildren, twenty-two great grandchildren, one great-great grandchild, and his brother Ted of Reedsburg, Wisconsin.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Letta in 1997, an infant daughter Joan Faye, parents Henry and Clara, and siblings: Clara Gerike Barbott, Henry Gerike, Walter Gerike, Louis Gerike, Ernst Gerike, Irene Gerike, Victor Gerike, Ruth Gerike Craven, and Winfred Gerike.
